Deadwood return to end Thirds winning run
After picking up their first league win of the season, the Thirds welcomed a record attendance to Fortress Kimber Road as they entertained a Rollers Athletic side who were pushing the top of the table after a decent start to the season.
To the fans' surprise, and later dismay, the Soche welcomed back a fully fit Jack Bingham who was eager to shake off the unwanted tag of 'deadwood' and had the perfect opportunity to please the home fans with an early goal as the ball fell perfectly on his preferred left peg but the visitors net remained empty as he squandered the game's first opening.
Shortly afterwards another fantastic opportunity to break the deadlock fell to the honorable Reverend Lovejoy after TK's freekick found the veteran centre back in oceans of space but he couldn't direct his header on target and has since committed himself to a week of self-flagellation in recompense. The half-time whistle blew with the Soche on top after a solid display that denied Rollers the chance to really create a decent chance on goal.
In the second half, Rollers got much more involved and could have taken the lead with a spectacular scissor kick but it was repelled by a good stop from Tommy P who was as solid as ever between the sticks. The Soche also continued to create a few chances with Ben RH fizzing a drive over the bar and D Fizz stinging the palms of the keeper. The Soche finally breached the deadlock after Leachy spurned a pinpoint TK freekick against the static keeper's shins and JD rifled home the rebound but the diminutive striker had strayed offside. Quite unlike him to be offisde from a free-kick.
The visiting goalkeeper had a piss. He could have got sent off for bringing the game into disrepute but the referee kept his cards in his pocket to reflect a fairly baffling performance from the man with the whistle.
The game finished goalless with the points shared but it will go down as a point gained rather than two lost as the Soche creep up table with a solid clean sheet under their belts. UTS
MOM: JD - proving you don't have to be ugly to be a good centre back with a flawless display.
