We arrived at King George's Park off the back of a largely positive pre-season, only to discover that our regular pitch had been taken over by three bouncy-castles and a gazebo.
After a few minutes of disarray, it was decided that we would all hop the fence and kick some kids off the narrowest pitch I've ever seen.
We set up in our usual formation, welcoming back Tommy P between the sticks and a debut for Andy in centre-mid.
It's fair to say that we started appallingly. Silly fouls, poor touches and lack of communication leaving us exposed and frustrated. This went from bad to worse when Oly went up for a header and came down with a broken nose, leading to his substitution and a trip to A&E.
However, we managed to hold strong and only conceded after a foul by their striker was not given, allowing him to slot home.
Thankfully, and arguably somewhat fortunately, we were awarded a penalty soon after with TK stepping up to make it honours-even at half time.
Our performance definitely improved in the second half. We found our touch and fought our way back into the game with JD and Andy getting to grips with their physical midfield. Billy and Felix caused their shaky defence a lot of problems and our work was rewarded when Felix used his pace to run through and make it 2-1.
We continued to dominate the game, with Daniel and Phil keeping their wingers in check. We increased our lead when Daniel found himself in space on the left hand side and weaved his way to the box, finding Tom and making it 3-1.
They pulled it back to 3-2 after converting a soft penalty. It could have been a fraught final ten minutes, until Tom charged into the box and spanked his shot into the top right hand corner making it 4-2 with only minutes to go.
Overall a good performance. It took character to fight ourselves back into the game and there were plenty of positives to take from our play. Motspur Park Reserves will take points off other teams, but we sent them packing empty-handed.
